“Green” INSIGHT
Can you help me get “green electricity” for my company or home?
Absolutely. There is no way to run a line directly from wind mills in West Texas to your home; however, we will arrange for you to get credit for purchasing your electricity from a renewable source. Keep in mind that buying a claim to renewable energy tends to have a premium cost.
Can I specifically buy “wind” power?
Yes, there are ways to purchase exclusive wind specific power. In fact, all REPs are required to allocate some portion of their electricity product mix with renewal energy. However, there are other great renewable energy sources like Solar, Hydro and Biomass in Texas. Again, keep in mind that exclusive renewable energy tends to carry a premium over traditional sources.
What is a REC?
Renewable Energy Credit (REC) is “green energy currency.” When electricity is generated from a renewable source (wind, sun, water, bio, etc.), the generator is able to create a REC, like printing money. The generator can sell these “green credits” into the market. The purchaser of a REC is able to take credit for using green power. Your electric provider is required by law to purchase a minimal amount of RECs to serve your needs. Some providers offer “green rates” that are premium to other rates because the provider paid for more RECs to serve its “green customers.” Each REP has an Electricity Facts Label that tells you what percentage of your electricity was generated from renewable sources.
